FCP 3.0/Avid Xpress DV 3.5 Shootout

Stumbled across this review and found it quite entertaining. Although I've only edited with FCP in my few short years as a video hobbyist, I recently had the opportunity to watch someone using Express DV (albeit on a Windows 2000 box). Unfortunately, I didn't have any time to get hands-on, so in lieu of that, I read as much as I can. When I saw this review mentioned, comparing FCP to the '900 lb. gorrilla', I had to take a gander.

The article is somewhat lengthy, but it's in-depth, fair, and written by a 14-year Avid editing veteran. It absolutely warms my heart to tell you that in the end, he likes FCP better, despite his Avid roots. If you have about 10-15 minutes, you might want to check it out for yourself.....

FCP - A Beginner's Guide to Final Cut Pro's Audio Filters

A really nice article on Ken Stone's site on some basic Audio filters. Hey, how do you get your Lav audio to match your Shotgun audio?

Dantz says Adaptec SCSI cards do not function "reliably" under Mac OS X

Eric Ullman of Dantz' technical marketing team sent MacFixIt the following statement on Adaptec SCSI card compatibility:

"Ongoing testing by DantzLab has found that Adaptec SCSI cards do not function in a consistent, reliable manner when used with Mac OS X. These findings are supported by hundreds of reports from customers who have experienced problems with tape and CD-RW devices attached to Adaptec SCSI cards.

"The problem, which affects all versions of Mac OS X including 10.2 (Jaguar), is not application specific. Rather, incorrect data is passed by the SCSI card to and from any program communicating with a SCSI device. The result may simply be an inaccessible device, or worse, data corruption can occur.

"Adaptec has been made aware of this problem, and they are working on a solution. However, until this issue is resolved, Dantz can no longer recommend or support Adaptec SCSI adapters for use with Mac OS X. These adapters include the Adaptec 2906, 2930 (which is also the $49 Ultra SCSI card option with the Power Mac G4), 29160, 29160N, and 39160 SCSI controllers.

"When Adaptec releases new software drivers that provide reliablefunctionality in Mac OS X, we will reinstate support for Adaptec SCSI adapters at that time."

service & support

Calling all Superdrive owners. There is an update to these drives. Apple hasn't released an updater yet. I'm not fully clear on the complete story, but you should be careful with higher speed recordable discs (2x and 4x DVD-R).

This is the pioneer link to update it. I don't know if it will work on the Apple Superdrive (which may have it's own custom firmware.)

More as it develops.

;Photo Scanning for Video ;

A nice article at LAFCPUG web site by Loren S. Miller. A subtle plug for his product, but extremely informative nonetheless. I enjoy learning something new every day, and this article certainly does that.

Sorry for the outage. Blogger was giving a little burp. Got it breathing again and look! All the archives are there.

Mac FCP Titles

Saw this on Versiontracker. Haven't had a chance to try it out.

Some automated method of creating titles between photoshop and FCP, using realbasic and applescript.

AppleScript for Video Editors
A little Apple Script that converts batch lists from FCP into Avid ALE logs and ALE to FCP batch lists.

Color Correction/Finishing in FCP

FYI, it looks like we are getting our very own Apple store in the near future. The King of Prussia mall will be the new home of Pennsylvania's only Apple branded store, they are currently hiring managers. We should make the opening an event in true "geek" fashion (BTW, Jeff, I almost went to that Jaguar party, LOL)...let's take over the genius bar and start fielding Final Cut and Imovie questions...

Digital Silence - Hardware, Software and Technology News Maxtor today announced it is shipping the industry's highest density hard disk drives. Both feature industry-leading 80 GB per platter areal densities. The DiamondMax 16 and the DiamondMax Plus 9 are designed for capacities to 160 GB.

fxguide.com - The Ultimate Compositing Website - Exclusive! Plug apparently pulled on Socratto "a socratto [employee] left yesterday, he told me, and this is confirmed, that socratto is dead. All the artist are leaving and the future of the code is not known."

Sony yet again hitting hard at the nle/compositing. The rumored 500,000-750,000 price target and competition from desktop systems like Shake made Socroatto a tough sell. (fxG)

W A R M C A R D S - White Balance Reference System

Thought this was neat. "Tinted" cards for white balancing - especially for fluorescent lighting.

Happy to be here, Jeff. Have you checked out the Macworld FCP UG Film Theater yet? It was great to have your group onboard for the event, and I am looking forward to collaborating with you in the near future. Incidentally, I'll be working in Philly Sept. 10-12!
